University of Westminster hosts Go4SET Day promoting STEM subjects to school pupils

The University of Westminster (lead educational sponsor of the Sir Simon Milton Westminster UTC) was proud to present the Network Rail Challenge Celebration and Assessment Day on Thursday 23 April, revolving around the overarching theme of ‘Stations for the Future’.
The 15-week Challenge was run in partnership with the University of Westminster and the .

In recognition of the importance of promoting STEM subjects, the University of Westminster is sponsoring a new University Technical College (UTC), named Sir Simon Milton Westminster, in the heart of London’s West End, which will open its doors for 14-18 year olds in 2017. An unrivalled Employer Alliance, consisting of Network Rail (lead employer partner), Transport for London, BT Fleet, Land Securities, Crossrail, Alstom and Sir Robert McAlpine, supports this development through contributions to curriculum design in transport engineering and construction engineering and management. In 2017, the UTC will admit 225 pupils from across London, with 75 joining Year 10 and 150 joining Year 12.

Students try cutting-edge scientific equipment at Science for Survival conference

Students had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in ‘Science for Survival’ at the 12th Annual Schools Science Conference held at University of Westminster’s Cavendish Campus on Wednesday 22 April 2015.Over 100 volunteer scientists and healthcare professionals attended the conference, held in collaboration with Science4u. The experts gave an inspirational insight into their day-to-day work introducing the different career routes available in science to 250 participating secondary school and further education college students (years 9-11).

Students had the opportunity to participate in various science-related activities including:

  • wearing protective clothing for dealing with infectious diseases such as Ebola
  • observing parasites and blood samples under a microscope
  • navigating different kinds of wheelchairs
  • making their own skin cream
  • illuminating bacteria on their hands under UV lights
  • making DNA strand bracelets and learning CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) procedures from the London Ambulance Service.

12th Annual Schools Science Conference – 22 April 2015

University of Westminster, lead educational sponsor of the Sir Simon Milton Westminster UTC, will host the 12th Annual Schools Science Conference in collaboration with Science4u on Wednesday 22 April 2015 at its in central London, with “Science for Survival” being this year’s overarching theme.

Bouygues Development and Redrow London are pleased to present their revised plans for the proposed Sir Simon Milton Westminster University Technical College, which will be located on the site of the former Ebury Centre, Sutherland Street.

Following extensive consultation, the scheme has now been significantly revised to reflect the feedback and comments from residents, councillors and stakeholders.

Working in partnership with Westminster City Council, University of Westminster and the Sir Simon Milton Foundation, these revised development proposals will provide a flagship technical college as well as delivering high quality new homes.

The public exhibition is open to all and there will be an opportunity to ask questions and formally register comments.
