Another busy week at the UTC! Many thanks for your support and positivity around the introduction of the weekly bulletin and please do continue to feedback any ideas and thoughts you may have to help us to improve it.
The new year is a time of change and we have said goodbye to some staff and hello to others.
Mr McLoughlin and Miss Whyte have moved onto other opportunities and we would like to thank them for all their hard work with our students. We wish them the very best in their next steps. If any parents have concerns about students that they would previously have discussed with Miss Whyte, please contact Miss Evans for year 10 and Mr Finn for year 12. (A.Evans@westminsterutc.ac.uk and M.Finn@westminsterutc.ac.uk) .
Mr Johnson and Mr Harms have now started as the permanent team for engineering. Both bring considerable experience and we are thrilled that they have joined us. Mr Johnson is now teaching the year 10 and year 12 engineering courses and Mr Harms is ensuring the smooth and safe running of our engineering workshops.
We have looked carefully at the proposed foreign visits that Miss Whyte had asked students about. We have made the decision that we will not continue with these but put on other visits that are more affordable. Do keep a look out for further news about these. I appreciate that some students will be disappointed with this news, but they will have plenty of other opportunities for trips.
If a student attends school or college, they will make good progress. Please could you have conversations with your young people to check they know their attendance. Every student should aim to be in the UTC for at least 95% of possible days to be able to benefit from their time here.
Sir Robert McAlpine are with us this term leading the projects. Our year 10 particularly have impressed them with their ideas for building development and the speed with which they take on new ideas and come up with suggestions of their own. Each student has their own role in their teams – do ask them about it.
Thank you to all who have donated books to the UTC. We now have a selection of books that will soon be displayed in a reading area in the UTC Reception, however we are very much still collecting!
We are collecting reading books donated from students, parents and teachers to create a place for quiet reading and book loan in the College. If you have any books you feel able to donate (fiction, non-fiction, of any age or ability), please bring them in with your child / ward and ask them to hand to Ella at Reception or to Miss Evans. Fiction books of interest to students aged 14 – 19 are preferred, but many types of books are useful and of interest. Many thanks in advance for your support.
IMPORTANT – Year 10 students must bring their PE kit to College on Tuesdays. Please kindly contact Ms Evans if there are any problems with kit.
A reminder that Year 10 PE will take place at the Black Prince Trust Sports Centre (Gibson Rd, Lambeth, London SE11 6PT) and also in the UTC. The venue will change depending on the activity your child is doing each week.
Students will be dismissed from the Sports Centre OR from the UTC at 4.30pm on Tuesdays at the end of the PE session. If you are not happy for your son/daughter to depart directly from the Sports Centre, please email me at the address below to organise alternative arrangements.
The UTC is hoping to introduce a Breakfast Club on Friday mornings before the College day starts, as an opportunity for students to enjoy a healthy breakfast and a time to discuss in an informal way their experiences and progress at the UTC. The Breakfast Club will also be helpful to those students who travel a long distance and/or who find it easier to arrive earlier in the morning due to transport. If you are interested in a place for your son/daughter to attend, please email Mr Coley directly: J.Coley@westminsterutc.ac.uk. Mr Coley will be in touch in due course with further information.
A message from Miss McLoughlin:
A short reminder that Year 10 have a Physics test on Friday 26th January. Their independent learning subject this week at the UTC is Physics work, which will also help them to prepare for the test.
Physics workbooks: a number of CGP Physics workbooks have been taken home by Year 10 students and not returned. These are essential for independent work done at the UTC. If you see a workbook at home, please could you ensure your son/daughter returns it to the UTC and informs Miss McLoughlin. Many thanks.
Our students have been kindly invited to attend an Entrepreneurship Boot Camp through our partnership with the University of Westminster. Many of our students have already attended Saturday Clubs in robotics, coding and cooking, and we welcome this next exciting opportunity. Details are below and a flyer is attached with this bulletin.
