“There are many challenges ahead for UK transport organisations to deliver a bigger and better network, and in particular for us to address the capacity issues on the railway to get more people to where they need to be. To meet these challenges, we need a technological transformation of the network to improve the capacity, speed and reliability of our railway in the face of ever-increasing demand for rail travel.

Network Rail owns, manages and develops Britain’s railway – the 20,000 miles of track, 40,000 bridges and viaducts and the thousands of signals, level crossings and stations (the largest of which we also run). In partnership with train operators we help people take more than 1.65bn journeys by rail every year and move hundreds of millions of tonnes of freight, saving almost 8m lorry journeys. We employ 36,000 people across Britain and work round-the-clock, each and every day, to provide a safe, reliable railway.
Network Rail has a proud history of employing and developing the future railway people through its apprenticeship, graduate, and higher education programmes. We will provide opportunities for UTC students to be involved in business challenge projects and offer work experience placements as part of their preparation to apply for the exciting opportunities that Network Rail has to offer.
Academic Qualifications Required
GCSE English, mathematics, and science plus one other subject at Grade A* – C or
NVQ or BTEC Level 2 or above in an Engineering subject
Year 1 – NVQ2 in Performing Engineering Operations, BTEC National Award in Engineering, Institute of Leadership Management (ILM) Level 2
Years 2-3 – NVQ3 in Railway Engineering, ILM Level 3 in First Line Management
Engineering – 2 years
Our engineering graduate programme offers schemes in Civil, Electrical and Electronic, and Mechanical Engineering.
Business Management – up to 2 years
The business management scheme provides opportunities in a wide range of disciplines including Finance, HR, Property and Project Management.
Our placement scheme is designed for students who are still currently studying towards their degree and need to spend a year in industry as part of their course.
